In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes, “That Rock was Christ.” Christ is a rock in the wilderness, providing water to his people in a barren land. In this Sunday’s message, Lead Pastor Josh Kelsey explains what this passage from Exodus reveals about our human condition and the Fount of Living Water that saves us.
A Condition of Desperate Need
- We are in a barren land, our souls thirsty for a Savior.
- We try to use other things to satisfy us, but they are not good enough. There is only one true and satisfying fount: Jesus Christ.
- Broken cisterns leave us thirsty because they cannot hold water.
An Unexpected Source of Supply
- The rock on its own could do nothing, but God in the rock could do everything.
- God’s wisdom is better than earthly wisdom—only God can lead us to a source that will truly satisfy us.
- Jesus is the rock that was struck to provide water. In our lives, Jesus will either be a stumbling block or he will be our Fount.
An Unlikely Means Used
- The rock of Christ is a river of living water, broken to bring us life.
- The rock was smitten in order to provide water. (Ex 17:6).
- Christ suffered so that we might have full salvation and abundant life.
A Gracious Provision Was Made
- The provision of Jesus was enough for everyone, abundant and limitless.
- The provision that flowed from Christ was love that covers all.
- You can trust that Jesus has an abundant supply for you.
